Bahçesaray (Müküs, Moks)
The Bahçesaray district of Van province, located south of Lake Van, has a reputation for isolation. The road to Van leads over one of the highest mountain passes in Turkey, the 3000 m Karapet pass. Until recently this road was often blocked by snow in winter, separating the district from the outside world for many months or weeks. The district consists of five wooded, green valleys and counts some 60 small settlements, reknowned for their traditional stone houses.
